For our volunteer teams we offer a twofold opportunity: first to be as Christ for others, to bring love, comfort and healing to some of our neighbors in great need and at the same time we receive the gift of seeing the face of Christ in others.
We also offer those who volunteer an opportunity to step out of our ordinary surroundings go out to form a missionary community that goes beyond our individual strengths and limitations as we combine our hearts and talents together to serve in the name of Christ knowing that Christ is with us as we serve.

For those we serve, we offer the love of Christ who works through us.
Ultimately we offer ourselves in service to our sisters and brothers.
As we offer ourselves in service, we see Christ in those we serve.

In John's Gospel (Jn. 13: 12,15) Jesus shocked his followers when he knelt before each one and washed their feet, ending his action with the words "Do you realize what I have done for you?...I have given you a model to follow, so that as I have done for you, you should also do." It is a powerful example that leaves each of us with this is a huge question: “Why volunteer, why step out in faith and go to help someone I don’t even know?”
I borrow some words from Matt Redman’s song “ten thousand reasons for my heart to find” and so many more as every volunteer has a very personal reasons for making that decision to step out and go on mission.
For some there as a desire to give back to the world for the blessings received or for the great compassion, kindness and mercy that has been shown to them. For others it is an opportunity to step out of the everyday routine and experience something very different. For some it is a longing for experience, even an encounter with the Holy, a chance to see the face of Christ in those in need. Some simply identify a problem, maybe within their field of expertise, talent or training and believe that they can be a part of the solution. Sometimes travel to some place new sparks our interest and the possibility of doing something worthwhile at the same time helps them make a decision to go and serve.
Many simply hear the words—“Come and you will see.”—and follow the voice of Christ.

In the Gospels Jesus gives us many examples about what it may be to live as a follower of the Christ. Many of his examples just don't seem to adapt to most of our Early 21st Century lifestyles. But to others caring for though poor and needy or tending to needs of widows and orphans may seem quite ordinary. Welcoming the alien among us and setting a place at our tables for them may seem quite counter-cultural. Keep in mind those acts of loving-kindness were out of the ordinary in the early 1st Century also.
The extraordinary thing is that in our time some people can discern the voice of Christ calling out in the midst of the noise of our lives, our busy-ness and distracted-ness and the call is the same "Come and see" "Come to me" and words about taking up the cross, about dying and rising to new life still ring out true and clear.
Spiritual growth is not passive. It requires of all who seek to grow in the Spirit, both human and divine, to accept that we are not gods but creations of God and God is alive and working in our lives. there are some keys to spiritual growth. Acceptance--of who I am as an imperfect and limited individual, loved by Christ beyond my imagining. This may help me to see those I seek to serve not as others who need my help but as others I need, family I have never known. Trust-- trust God and God's Word-- as St. Paul said we are to "be confident of this , that [God] who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion" (Philippians 1:6). There is no doubt much more that can be said of what opens each of us to the new work of Emmanuel [God-in-us, God-with-us].
"Come and you will see" For those who enter into mission with Christ Smiles Dental Mission the opportunities for spiritual growth, growth I the Holy Spirit of God, are unlimited, just as the works of the Holy Spirit of God knows no bounds.
